Mississippi River Flight - Day Two
Chicago to Perham, Minnesota

I got a good, early start and was soon winging my way northwest towards northwest Minnesota.  I couldn't have asked for better weather.

Here I am passing Madison, Wisconsin.  I've never seen Madison before.  I found it interesting how the city seems to be on a land-bridge between two lakes.

I noticed this unusual complex below about 10 miles southwest of Madison.  I found it on Google Maps; it the corporate campus of Epic which I've never heard of.  From their webpage: "Founded in a basement in 1979 with 1½ employees, Epic develops software to help people get well, help people stay well, and help future generations be healthier."  Looks like they are doing pretty well!

Crossing the Wisconsin River.  It runs east to west and joins the Mississippi River to the west.

Western Wisconsin is pretty country.  I went down a little lower to get a good look.  I was surprised to see a little color in the leaves.

Maybe more than a "little" color.

Crossing the Buffalo River I believe.

Cruisng over western Wisconsin.

My first view of the Mississippi River to the west.  I am flying parallel to it at this point.

A delta area flowing into the Mississippi.

Crossing the Chippewa River, which also flows into the Mississippi to the south.  The Chippewa runs to Eau Claire, Wisconsin to the north.

I'm close to the Mississippi River.  You can't really see it but Minneapolis-St. Paul is at center in the distance.

Entering the downwind leg at my destination for today:  Perham Airport.

The Terminal at Perham Airport.  It maybe little but it has everything a pilot on cross-country needs:  a bathroom, useful information posted, a couch to rest on, keys to the courtesy car.   Self-serve fuel pump is to the right.  Perham had an excellent fuel price which is why -- along with the courtesy car -- as my overnight destination for today.

Today was a short day -- only three hours of flying.  I drove into town and had an outstanding late breakfast at Lakes Cafe in downtown Perham.

Perham is only 30 miles or so south of the Mississippi River head at Lake Itasca.  Tomorrow I hit it!
